A pair of exceptional George III neoclassical candlesticks have fluted tapering columns that are decorated with Adam-style motifs onto oval spreading bases. The oval spreading bases are further ornamented with embossed and subtly concave fluted decoration. The candlesticks are made in Sheffield in 1785 bearing the mark of the London silversmith, Thomas Daniell. These candlesticks would have been retailed at his shop “The Silver Lyon” in Foster Lane, close to the Goldsmiths’ Hall. They would almost certainly have been made for him by the well-known Sheffield candlestick maker, John Parsons, and Daniell would have struck his mark over the top (a common early form of own branding). These candlesticks are in excellent condition throughout and still retain their original mahogany wood bases (covered by baize). They are correctly marked on both detachable nozzles. The candlesticks are struck with the incuse head of George III (only used from December 1784 until May 1786) to show that tax had been paid.
