Home to some of the finest silverware in the world, John Surtees have been trading from the London Silver Vaults for over 25 years, a famous building which is situated beneath the north end of London’s Chancery Lane marking the very western boundary of the City of London.
Opened officially in 1953 the building’s heritage can be traced back to 1227, when the street became home to the Lord Chancellor’s palace (from which Chancery is derived).
Henceforth it was associated with the legal profession, and various Inns of Court, including Lincoln’s and Staple Inns, flourished around it. After six decades, the London Silver Vaults remain the largest retail space for antique and modern silverware in the world, and we are proud to be one of the businesses that are multi-generation family enterprises.

John Surtees buys silverware and silver items directly from the public, at our showroom in the London Silver Vaults: antique and vintage pieces, canteens of cutlery, tea services, trophies, and individual items, whether or not you already know what you have. We pay for what a piece actually is, not just what it weighs.
A Dealer, Not a Refinery
Most businesses that advertise buying silver are refineries or bullion traders, and they price everything the same way: by melting it down and paying for the metal it contains. That’s a fair offer for genuine scrap, but it’s the wrong offer for a canteen of cutlery, a Georgian teapot, or a set that’s been in a family for three generations. Pieces like that are usually worth considerably more intact than melted. We’re silversmiths and dealers first, and we look at the maker, the hallmark, the period, and the condition of a piece, before we ever consider its weight.
