“Miscellany” is a deliberately broad section for individually interesting silver pieces that don’t fit a dedicated category and don’t yet have the numbers to justify one — an antique photograph frame is a good example of what turns up here. The silver photograph frame came into its own in the late Victorian and Edwardian era, when the new fashion for portrait photography met an existing taste for decorative silver; most are silver-fronted rather than solid, with a hallmarked, repoussé silver sheet mounted on a wooden back and easel stand, often finished with a blank cartouche for a monogram. Because that silver front is thin, condition matters more here than on heavier pieces — crisp, undamaged repoussé holds its value far better than one with dents or pushed-in decoration, and a genuine matching pair is worth notably more than two unrelated singles. Given the range of objects that can appear in this section, we’d rather describe each piece on its own merits than force a single shared history onto it — but as with everything we sell, every piece is genuine and hallmarked where silver content applies.
