Style & Maker History
Boxes have served a genuinely practical purpose for over 200 years, not just a decorative one. Georgian and Victorian examples were often made for carrying something specific and valuable on the person — snuff, sovereigns, even postage stamps. The most decorative work — chased detail, hand-engraved scenes, figural novelty designs — is characteristic of the Victorian period particularly, with vinaigrettes, nutmeg graters, and snuff boxes among the most sought-after types from that era. As the practical need for carrying such items declined through the twentieth century, jewellery and cigar boxes took their place, generally in simpler, plainer designs than their Georgian and Victorian predecessors.
