Style & Maker History
“Bowls” covers several related forms with a shared Georgian-through-Victorian history: rose bowls for displaying cut flowers, sugar bowls, punch bowls, and general presentation bowls. Decoration tends to follow purpose — floral chasing or piercing on a rose bowl, plainer forms with a gilt interior for sugar, where the gilding genuinely protects the silver against sugar’s acidity rather than being purely decorative. Georgian pieces are typically plain, standing on a spreading foot or four ball or shell feet; Victorian examples are often more elaborate, sometimes twin-handled, and occasionally take a naturalistic form entirely — Heath & Middleton were known for sculptural pieces such as a sugar bowl modelled as an open lotus flower. Mappin & Webb and the Barnard family workshop are among the makers whose bowls turn up regularly in the trade.
