Pair of Salts London – 1737

A pair of fine and substantial early George II cauldron salt cellars with fine sloping gadroon borders and trefoil hoof feet. The interiors are gilded to prevent corrosion. They are larger and heavier than most at this date and are nicely engraved with an original family crest of a Griffin. A very similar pair can be seen on p. 30 of the Hennell Salt Cellars book. David Hennell was apprenticed to Edward Wood and adopted many of his patterns. The maker, Edward Wood, was a specialist maker of salt cellars. The salts are in good condition.
